Antarctica
Expedition to the White Continent
Abord the All-Suite, 114-Guest Corinthian II
February 17 - March 1, 2009
Dear Traveler,
In a world digitized and hyperlinked, Antarctica
is civilization’s antidote. Here, Nature has its own
clock, timed to the hatchings of penguin chicks,
the flight of an albatross, the calving of a glacier
and the slow, inexorable art that waves and wind
sculpt upon the icebergs.
I recently had the pleasure of experiencing
Antarctica aboard the Corinthian II, and I
am thrilled to not only make this destination
available, but to offer tailored program
enhancements and special events exclusively
for AMV travelers. Our vessel, the 114-guest,
all-suite Corinthian II, is the finest small ship
operating in Antarctic waters, a cocoon of
elegance perfect for admiring the icebergs
with like-minded traveling companions. Our
ship’s complement includes some of the most
experienced and knowledgeable experts on
Antarctica’s terrain, bird life, sea life, geology
and glaciology, who will enlighten us throughout
our voyage via lectures, presentations and on-site
nature observation.
Your adventure will begin in vibrant Buenos
Aires, a city whose European origins are evident
upon first sight. By day, explore the breathtaking
views of the city’s legendary architecture; by
night, enjoy the world’s finest tango experience
at famed Esquinas Carlos Gardel. From the stark
beauty of the city, travel to the Argentinean
countryside for an unforgettable visit at Estancia
La Martina Polo Ranch, where the unscathed
terrain affords you the opportunity to experience
the way of life of the country’s fabled cattle
ranchers. Having visited both urban and rural
Argentina, prepare for your storied voyage to the
seventh continent.
As we cruise south from Ushuaia, albatrosses
will likely be skimming above our bow as we
head to the Antarctic Convergence. Then, for
five full days, we will explore the Antarctic
Peninsula and its surrounding islands, where
shore landings by sturdy Zodiac landing craft
may include visits to 10,000-strong penguin
rookeries, old whaling stations, operational
research stations and elephant seal colonies. The
humpback and minke whales, Adelie penguins,
and whirling Antarctic petrels—among dozens
of other species—are astonishingly plentiful,
and they are not shy. They do not hide. We will
have the incredible opportunity to observe them
in their natural habitat.
Seize the moment and experience Antarctica,
undoubtedly one of the rarest and most
astonishing travel destinations our globe has
to offer. The Austral summer months on the
Antarctic Peninsula are surprisingly warm, with
highs in the 30s and 40s. Aboard the Corinthian
II, with its roster of scientists and naturalists, this
is undoubtedly the way to experience the trip of
a lifetime.
Sincerely,
Annemarie Victory

AN UNFORGETTABLE VOYAGE LED BY
SEASONED EXPEDITION LEADERS AND NATURALISTS
Our voyage features a team of experienced expedition
staff and lecturers—expert naturalists, scientists and
leaders who know Antarctica well and who are eager to
introduce you to the geology, wildlife and history of this
awe-inspiring land. In the company of these noted experts
we’ll cruise magnificent ice-filled channels, explore
busy penguin rookeries and learn about the rhythms of
life in the “Deep South.” The team will be led by:
Expedition Leader John Frick returns
for his sixth season leading expedition
travel to Antarctica. He has
logged over 30 Antarctic expeditions
and is among the most experienced
tour advisors in the world’s coldest climates.
John’s wanderlust surfaced during
his undergraduate studies and has
since led him to live in Alaska, to work in Nepal as a Peace Corps Volunteer and to lead hundreds of programs
over the last 15 years. His voyages have taken him to many far-flung areas of the globe including Africa, Alaska,
South America, the Canadian Arctic, Greenland, the Mediterranean, the Baltic, India, trans-Atlantic and the
South Pacific. He again looks forward to sharing with Corinthian II guests his enthusiasm for travel and for the
wonders of the natural world, in particular for the White Continent.
LECTURER
Orrin Pilkey is the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus in the Nicholas School of the Environment and
Earth Sciences at Duke University. He is a coastal geologist with expertise on shoreline erosion and nearshore
oceanography. He began his career studying deep sea sediments on abyssal plains and gradually moved
into shallow water, first on the continental shelf and than to the beaches. Pilkey, always an enthusiastic
field trip leader, has received a number of awards for his studies of the sedimentology of beaches and barrier
islands and for contributions to the public understanding of science. In his career as a coastal scientist,
he has traveled widely and brings to bear on the problem of global warming and especially sea level rise, a
widely respected global perspective. He has published a number of books (mostly for lay audiences) on subjects
ranging from coastal hazards, the US Army Corps of Engineers, a global perspective on barrier islands,
problems with mathematical models and guides on “how to read” beaches. Currently he is writing a book on
sea level rise and is particularly interested (and concerned with) the impending disintegration of glaciers at
the margins of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and on the Antarctic Peninsula.

EXCERPT FROM NATURALIST’S LOG
Antarctic Summer 2007
Saturday, December 22, 2007
USHUAIA, Argentina • Longitude 54º 48.5’S / Latitude 68º 18.5’W
Corinthian II sailed off from Ushuaia at 17:10, with Kelp Gulls leading the
way. Our party of 114—or at least most of us—were gathered on deck to
snap photos, ID the wildlife and chat with our shipboard naturalists. Forging
onward through the Beagle Channel, we spotted Greater and Sooty Shearwaters,
Dolphin and Kelp Gulls and Rock Shags.
GOING WITH THE FLOE
The itinerary in this brochure is only a sketch, as it should be. Sunny skies,
snow flurries, a sudden squall and an atmospheric fog are all quite possible in a
single day. Icebergs block channels but also create towering works of art worthy
of reflection and meditation. With extended daylight, we have the potential to
launch our Zodiac boats any time. We have our favorite spots and intended
harbors, but Nature is fickle. That means your Antarctic expedition is a unique
event, all your own. To make the most of it, we offer a combination of unrivaled
expertise, creativity and an unsurpassed knowledge of Antarctica. If ice blocks a
passage, we know other places where the penguins are just as plentiful. If it’s too
foggy for a safe transit, we can expertly judge the weather to know how to give
you the most rewarding experience. Our naturalists and Corinthian II’s captain
are constantly on the lookout for anything particularly spectacular. And we’ll
linger when and where possible for maximum observation opportunities.

A Frank Discussion About Fuel Costs & Rates of Exchange
Given the uncertain, often volatile oil market and the dollar’s decline
relative to the Euro and other currencies, it is extremely difficult to predict
fuel costs over the long term, and, more specifically, at the time of
this voyage. Our prices are based upon the prevailing fuel rates and rates
of exchange at the time of brochure printing (usually nine months before
departure). While we will do everything possible to maintain our prices,
it may be necessary to institute a surcharge. If one is necessary, the total
surcharge for your voyage will not exceed $250 per person. Thank you for
your understanding.
